An interesting article posted in many blogs

Medical transcriptionists, MTs, originally served as secretaries to medical professionals who dictated detailed patient information. After the dictation process is complete, the medical transcriptionists listen to the information and write everything in a clear and grammatically correct fashion, making the files easier to read and understand. The MTs then send the document back to the professional who dictated it to review and revise the document before signing off for its completion. After this process is complete, the final revised copy will become part of the patient's permanent record.
If the process is done correctly the files will be more easily accessible and accurate and will, in turn, help medical offices and hospitals run more smoothly. It is important that doctors and medical transcriptionists establish a strong working relationship and have constant communication for the process to be successful.

Using the Internet in Educating Science & Medicine

The Virtual Labs Series produced by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute were recognized as the best multimedia products designed to use the Internet to educate about science and technology. Below are links to the labs

The Cardiology Lab
http://www.hhmi.org/biointeractive/vlabs/index.html
The focus of this lab is on heritable diseases of the heart. You are cast here as a virtual intern to accompany a doctor examining three different patients. Each patient is examined using more than one diagnostic tool, and at each stage, the doctor will invite you to examine the patient yourself and ask for your opinion.

The Neurophysiology Lab
http://www.hhmi.org/biointeractive/vlabs/index.html
Record electrical activities of individual neurons while you deliver mechanical stimulus to the attached skin. Inject fluorescent dyes into the neurons to visualize their morphology. Identify the neurons based on the morphology and the response to stimuli, comparing them to previously published results.

The Immunology Lab
http://www.hhmi.org/biointeractive/vlabs/index.html
Components of the immune system called antibodies are found in the liquid portion of blood and help protect the body from harm. Antibodies can also be used outside the body in a laboratory-based assay to help diagnose disease caused by malfunctions of the immune system or by infections. This virtual laboratory will demonstrate how such a test, termed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), is carried out and show some of the key experimental problems that may be encountered.

The "Open Access and the Developing World" portal
